The Firefighters Historical Museum was established to create a centralized collection of items of firefighting heritage as a historical and educational legacy for Erie, Pennsylvania and its citizens of tomorrow. In addition, the Museum serves as a permanent tribute to firefighters of Erie, the country and the world, whose dedication and devotion to duty, at the risk of their own lives, is an eternal vigilant protection for the citizenry whose lives they are entrusted with.
The Firefighters Historical Museum was founded in 1968 and moved into its current location, the former Erie Fire Department Engine #4 firehouse a few years later. The Museum officially opened at the corner of West 5th and Chestnut on May 8, 1976.
